STRATEGIC PARTNER
A pioneer in the arena of mobile product development and location-based services, Kit Macgillivray has been at the forefront of this field over the last 10 years. He is passionate about the accelerating convergence of the digital and physical, and brings a track record of successful innovation and hands-on management to The Realtime Project team.
Kit began his career as an Ecologist investigating how plants and animals interact with their environment through spatial relationships and interconnectedness. These questions drove him towards the worlds of GIS, mapping and machine learning modeling.
In 2001, Kit moved into digital media, and found his niche in the nascent mobile sector. Starting as a Product Development Manager at Mapminder, he worked on one of the first map-based web services that integrated content, location and social networks.
Kit then moved to Telmap, a leading mobile satnav and location-based services provider. Founded in 2000 and privately held within the Science Navigation Group, Telmap was amongst the first to define and develop the field of mobile location based services and navigation and has grown to be the market leader for mobile navigation across EMEA. Telmap is internationally recognised for its innovative technology and outstanding ability to deliver quality products and services to its customers.
After working within the product team at Telmap, Kit stepped up to establish and run the Telmap Direct UK business with responsibility for growing the company’s direct-to-consumer channels and revenue stream. He also established a web services unit for Telmap and led product innovation for web and mobile location applications. On a day-to-day basis he managed the product, development and sales teams and built the London-based unit from conception to a team of 15 driving a successful unit within Telmap, working with tier 1 mobile operators including Vodafone and O2 as well as retailers such as The Carphone Warehouse.
Most recently, Kit has been working on projects across diverse sectors helping both startups and large-scale companies understand how they can be benefit from the collision of mobile computing, social location and user-generated content. He is particularly interested in how media is being atomised, personalised and delivered in realtime, and how physical spaces are becoming increasingly connected to the digital world.
Kit was born and raised in Canada before living, working and travelling throughout Europe, Australasia and Asia. He holds a B.Sc Hons in Plant Ecology from Otago University, New Zealand.
